Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado led a rescue operation on Saturday that saved five dogs and a cat from an abandoned home in the Puerto Maya neighborhood, after a citizen complaint was posted on social media.
The operation was coordinated by the Playa del Carmen municipal government as part of its animal welfare policy. Mercado was accompanied by Kandy Mendoza, secretary of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change.
“We immediately responded to the report we received on social media about some dogs in Puerto Aventuras,” Mercado said.
Personnel from the Center for Animal Control, Assistance and Zoonoses (CENCAAZ), with support from the Municipal Public Security Secretariat, carried out the rescue. The animals are now in protective custody and are receiving comprehensive medical evaluations, veterinary tests, food, specialized care and treatment for their recovery.
Mercado personally supervised the transfer and reception of the animals at CENCAAZ, where they will remain under observation until their health allows for a responsible adoption process.
“We will continue to update you on their health, and when they are ready, we will begin the process to find them a home full of love and care,” she said.
Mercado reiterated that animal abuse will not be tolerated in Playa del Carmen and that her administration will continue strengthening prevention, attention and protection efforts. “In Playa del Carmen, every report counts and every life matters,” she said.
