Tulum, Quintana Roo — A woman riding as a passenger on a motorcycle died after the bike rear-ended a cargo truck on Highway 307, in front of Akumal, authorities reported.

The man driving the Suzuki motorcycle was heading north on the highway when he changed lanes without adjusting his speed, according to the initial account. The motorcycle struck the rear of a FAW cargo truck carrying Yucatán license plates.

The impact threw both riders onto the pavement, where they slid to a stop at the side of the road.

Private paramedics reached the scene and rushed the couple to a hospital in Playa del Carmen, where they were admitted in serious condition.

The woman later died of her injuries, officials confirmed.

National Guard personnel secured the crash site and called for a tow truck to remove the wrecked motorcycle and the damaged cargo truck.
