Sargassum Barrier Installation Begins in Puerto Aventuras

A wide body of rippling blue water stretches between two tree covered banks under a partly cloudy sky.

Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — After weeks of waiting for the weather to cooperate, crews this weekend began installing a sargassum deflection barrier in Puerto Aventuras, a project aimed at keeping the macroalgae out of key spots around the bay.

The Puerto Aventuras Residents’ Association said improved weather and calmer seas allowed the work to start, but stressed that the structure will be put in place gradually and in line with established technical procedures.

The barrier is planned to run about 1.5 kilometers, protecting strategic points in the community including Bahía Fátima, the yacht club and Laguna Kantenah.

Residents question the timing

The start of the work has raised questions among some residents, since sargassum levels in the area are currently low and the heaviest seaweed season has already ended.

The association countered that the barrier will not be installed all at once, but in stages governed by sea conditions and the safety of the crews carrying out the job.

According to the organization, the project required technical studies, paperwork, permits, and the manufacture and transport of the equipment, along with coordination with various authorities. In recent days it also received observations from the Mexican Navy regarding how the work should be carried out.

Pace depends on the sea

The association said that once the materials reached Puerto Aventuras, it had to wait for favorable conditions before beginning to place the barrier.

“After the barrier arrived in Puerto, we kept watching the weather, waiting for the right moment to begin the work safely and responsibly,” the group said in a statement.

Officials noted that progress will depend on how the sea behaves, meaning the work could be adjusted or temporarily suspended when conditions do not allow crews to operate safely.

The barrier is designed to divert sargassum before it reaches protected areas, although its effectiveness will depend on factors such as ocean currents, wave action and the volume of seaweed reaching the coast.

No completion date has been announced for the full installation.
