Puerto Aventuras Families Honor Loved Ones With Janal Pixán at Municipal Cemetery

A large skeleton figure in a dark blue and red dress and wide hat stands beside a cemetery path decorated with flower petals, candles, and colorful paper banners at dusk.

Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — Families in Puerto Aventuras gathered at the municipal cemetery to commemorate Janal Pixán 2026, carrying the Day of the Dead tradition into a night of remembrance, prayer and music for those who have died.

The celebration, held under the banner “Mayan tradition, culture and memory,” is part of the Day of the Dead festivities promoted by Playa del Carmen municipal president Estefanía Mercado.

Juan Arena led the ceremony in Puerto Aventuras, where residents kept the community’s customs alive through a program that combined religious observance with local artistic talent.

The evening opened with a prayer for the faithful departed, followed by performances that accompanied families through the traditional date.

The lineup included mariachi, the Academia Caribe, the jaranero group Buenos Vecinos and folkloric performances by Diamantes del Carmen, which added a cultural dimension to the commemoration.

Arena stressed the importance of preserving the customs that form part of Puerto Aventuras’ identity and passing them to younger generations.

“Today we are brought together by Janal Pixán, one of the most significant traditions in our culture, which reminds us where we come from, who we are and the importance of keeping our roots alive,” he said.

He credited Mercado with supporting efforts to promote activities that let children and young people learn about and share the traditions of their families.

Arena thanked the families who took part and those who made the commemoration possible, noting that remembering loved ones also means recognizing the lessons, stories and values they left behind in the community.

“Because a community that remembers its roots is a community that keeps its history alive,” he said.
