Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A cyclist suffered severe injuries Wednesday after a dump truck struck him and pinned him under the vehicle at one of the city’s busiest intersections.
The accident occurred around 1:00 p.m. at the Arco Vial crossing near the entrance to the Hunab Ku residential complex. The victim was riding along 28 de Julio Avenue and crossing 115 Avenue with a green light when the dump truck driver attempted a left turn without yielding, according to initial reports.
The impact threw the cyclist under one of the truck’s tires, crushing his bicycle completely. Municipal police officers arrived quickly and called firefighters to free the trapped man. After several minutes of work, rescuers extracted the victim, and Red Cross paramedics stabilized him at the scene.
The cyclist was rushed to the IMSS-Bienestar hospital, where doctors diagnosed fractures in both legs. His condition was reported as serious.
Police detained the dump truck driver at the scene and turned him over to the State Prosecutor’s Office, which has opened an investigation to determine responsibility.
The incident highlights ongoing safety risks at high-traffic intersections in Playa del Carmen, where heavy vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians frequently share the road, often leading to serious collisions.
