Families in Chetumal Mark One Year of Casa Xibalbá Pet Crematorium Fraud With Collective Altar

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Families who were handed soil instead of their pets’ ashes at a Chetumal crematorium will build a collective altar on Thursday to honor the animals, marking one year since the fraud was uncovered.

The gathering is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Avenida Primo de Verdad, between Bulevar Bahía and Calle Isla Contoy, near the site where the remains were found. Organizers extended the invitation to everyone who filed a complaint against Guillermo “N” and Brizeydi “N”, the operators accused of charging for cremation services and returning urns filled with dirt.

The altar will feature photographs, flowers, candles and offerings. Some families have already set up memorials in their own homes since October 27, the date dedicated to pets during Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebrations, but agreed to come together at the site of the discovery.

Two suspects in custody as case files advance

Guillermo “N” remains held at the Chetumal Social Reintegration Center (Cereso), while Brizeydi “N” is under house arrest for a breastfeeding period.

The president of the association Toda Vida es Importante, which also provides legal advice to the victims, said that as of early October, 60 case files had been brought before a judge on charges of fraud and usurpation of profession, out of more than 300 complaints filed. Another 40 were still awaiting judicialization, while the rest were at various stages of the process. Two files are awaiting a conviction.

He explained that several cases have reached the intermediate phase, in which a judge allows the parties to consider a reparations agreement. Each family can accept compensation for damages and moral harm, or continue the proceedings until a sentence is handed down.

According to the legal representative, nine out of every 10 families have said they intend to reject any agreement and pursue a final resolution. The legal team has also asked authorities to review Brizeydi “N”’s precautionary measure so that she returns to the Cereso once the legal period tied to breastfeeding ends.
