Chihuahua Governor Accuses Morena of Building a ‘Narco-Government’

Chihuahua, Mexico — Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos accused the ruling Morena party of handing power to organized crime and building a “narco-government” during a rally led by National Action Party (PAN) leaders, including former presidents Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderón, and former presidential candidate Xóchitl Gálvez.

Campos claimed that Sinaloa serves as a “laboratory” for this political model, where, she said, “the narco makes the decisions.” She also alleged a political persecution campaign against opposition governments and figures.

The event took place amid escalating tensions between the PAN and Morena over a federal investigation into a raid on a drug lab in the Sierra Tarahumara that involved U.S. agents and resulted in the deaths of two intelligence officers. The controversy prompted Morena lawmakers to seek impeachment proceedings against Campos for alleged violations of national sovereignty.

In her speech, Campos argued that Morena uses institutions to persecute the opposition while protecting individuals linked to organized crime investigations. She insisted her administration had acted against criminal structures operating in Chihuahua.

The rally drew the PAN’s national leadership and prominent figures, including Fox, Calderón, Ricardo Anaya, Gálvez, and party president Jorge Romero Herrera, in a show of support for the governor.

The PAN has denounced the investigation as a politically motivated attack and accused the federal government of using the Federal Prosecutor’s Office as a tool to pressure the opposition.

The conflict escalated after the Federal Prosecutor’s Office summoned Campos as a witness in the probe into the involvement of U.S. agents in operations on Chihuahua soil. Meanwhile, Morena deputies pushed for impeachment, arguing that foreign agents operated without federal authorization.

Campos has rejected the accusations, maintaining that authorities are trying to fabricate a case against her. Morena contends the matter involves potential violations of national sovereignty and must be investigated by the appropriate authorities.

The dispute has become a key battleground between the ruling party and the opposition ahead of the 2027 electoral process, with the PAN closing ranks around the governor and Morena pursuing legal and political action against her.
