Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Civil Registry in Othón P. Blanco is considering offering discounts and possible free-of-charge gender change procedures during June, in recognition of Pride Month.

Hugo Rojas, director of the municipal Civil Registry, said the current cost of the procedure is approximately 1,400 pesos (about $75), combining municipal and state fees. The goal is to make the process more accessible for those seeking to update their legal gender.

Rojas noted that about ten gender changes were performed in the municipality during 2025, and emphasized that the primary objective is to guarantee the right to identity for all individuals.

To begin the process, applicants must present their birth certificate, CURP (unique population registry code), and complete various official forms at the Civil Registry.

The procedure automatically includes a name change on official documents. Afterward, individuals must update their school records, medical services, payroll, and other administrative documents.

Rojas added that officials also provide guidance to help applicants navigate subsequent changes with other institutions.
