Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mayor Ana Paty Peralta has announced a partnership with the nonprofit Enderezando Curvas and the DIF Benito Juárez social services agency to provide free corrective surgeries for children and adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis.
“Today we are talking about a health condition that, if detected early, can be treated with very good results. Scoliosis does not have to limit the lives, dreams or futures of those who suffer from it,” Peralta said. “We will not spare a single peso so that every child and adolescent can have a new opportunity like Andrea.”
She cited the story of beneficiary Andrea Bolaños as an example of courage and perseverance, emphasizing the importance of timely care so that children can receive proper support and enjoy a full, active life.
The mayor recognized the work of Enderezando Curvas president Anie Karen Sotomayor Islas and her team, as well as the commitment of DIF Benito Juárez, which will serve as a bridge to accompany families throughout the process, including transportation for patients and a companion to Mexico City for surgeries.
DIF Benito Juárez director Marisol Sendo Rodríguez said the initiative offers hope and well-being through awareness campaigns, training for health workers, early detection, and access to specialized care. She noted that DIF and the municipal government will cover travel expenses to Mexico City, and thanked the Executive Secretariat of the Municipal System for the Comprehensive Protection of Children and Adolescents (SIPINNA) for connecting with Enderezando Curvas.
Sotomayor Islas said the collaboration fulfills the dream of helping Cancún’s children, noting that idiopathic scoliosis affects not only mobility but also self-esteem, and that surgery costs of 1 to 2 million pesos are out of reach for most families. “By collaborating with DIF Benito Juárez, we aim to open more doors to continue supporting those who need it most,” she said.
