Three Injured as SUV Overturns in Early Morning Cancún Crash

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Three people were injured and an SUV flipped onto its side early Saturday after a driver allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of José López Portillo and Chac Mool avenues.

The crash involved a red Dodge Journey and a black Volkswagen Jetta. Emergency crews and authorities from multiple agencies responded to the scene.

According to initial reports, the Dodge Journey was traveling on Chac Mool Avenue and attempted to turn onto José López Portillo Avenue without stopping for the red light. The Volkswagen Jetta, which had the right of way, struck the SUV, causing it to overturn and block a lane.

Inside the SUV was a family returning from a quinceañera celebration. Two women and a minor sustained injuries and were first treated by Jet Medical paramedics, followed by Red Cross personnel who provided additional pre-hospital care.

National Guard officers on patrol arrived at the scene to manage traffic and secure the area while the vehicles blocked the roadway.

Traffic investigators collected evidence to determine how the crash occurred and establish fault. Both vehicles were later towed to an impound lot, and the drivers were turned over to the public prosecutor’s office for further proceedings.

The accident caused significant delays on José López Portillo Avenue for about 40 minutes until the scene was cleared.
