Mérida, Yucatán — A man lost his forearm after his pickup truck slammed into a guardrail on the Mérida–Cancún toll highway, authorities said.
The driver was heading toward Quintana Roo when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel, causing him to lose control and hit the metal barrier. The guardrail pierced the vehicle and caused the severe injury, according to preliminary reports.
Emergency crews freed the man, who was found unconscious inside the truck, and rushed him to a hospital for specialized medical care.
National Guard officers responded to the scene and are investigating to determine responsibility.
