Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Cozumel is holding hotel occupancy at an average of 70 percent even during the off-season, thanks to the island’s growing sports tourism sector, which has strengthened its appeal among visitors who stay for several days.
Quintana Roo’s tourism secretary, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, said more than 460,000 overnight tourists visited Cozumel in the first half of the year, putting the destination on track to surpass one million accommodated visitors by the end of 2026.
Cueto Riestra attributed the performance to a calendar of international sporting events held throughout the year, including the Oceanman and the Ironman Cozumel, which is scheduled for November and is considered one of the most important races in Mexico’s sports calendar.
He noted that sports tourism generates a steady stream of revenue for hotels, restaurants, shops and service providers, while reinforcing Cozumel’s reputation as one of the country’s leading sports tourism destinations.
