Workers at Mayakoba Resort Stage Labor Stoppage Over Salary Deductions

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Workers at the Mayakoba resort complex began a labor stoppage Friday morning, accusing management of making opaque wage deductions and of failing to report taxes to the Tax Administration Service (SAT) and the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).

Uri Carmona Islas, a Playa del Carmen city council member and CROC union leader in the Riviera Maya, led the protest. Around 8 a.m., workers gathered at the complex entrance holding signs that read, “The service is provided by workers. Respect my income!” and “We demand fair pay!”

According to the workers, the company deducts income tax from paychecks but has not been transparent about how those amounts are calculated or reported to tax authorities. They also said deductions are being applied to tips, a practice they want labor authorities to review immediately.

Workers said the company has refused to address the complaints raised by most employees, prompting them to suspend work temporarily until management clarifies its position and makes the deductions transparent.

During the demonstration, Carmona used a loudspeaker to denounce the company for preventing him from entering the complex as a union representative to speak with administrators.

“The fact that they won’t let an authority in to carry out a legal labor process is a very serious violation, and we have to defend our position,” he said. “It is vital to take a stand now, because it is not just this issue — we know about the deductions they have been making from tips, and the worst part is that no one knows what has been done with that money.”

After the demonstration, workers entered the complex and waited for management to meet with them. The company had not issued a public response at the time of writing.
