Mérida, Yucatán — The Mérida City Council has announced the August schedule for the Olimpo Season 2026, which kicks off this weekend with the play “Xa’ak” on Saturday, August 1, and the Sonidero del Parque outdoor music event on Sunday, August 2.
Karla Berrón Cámara, the city’s director of identity and culture, said the lineup includes premieres, concerts, free workshops and activities for all ages. “The August program brings incredible projects that will be premiered, as well as promotion projects and free workshops,” she said. “It is very important to highlight projects of music production, reading and illustration for all audiences.”
Berrón Cámara noted that one of the goals of the Olimpo Season is to strengthen learning through art, in line with Mérida’s membership in UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities. She said workshops will continue to introduce children and adults to different artistic expressions.
Claudia Chapa Cortés, deputy director of culture, said the play “Xa’ak, a play I thought was more about me and ended up being about my mother,” written by Miriam de Jesús Chi Chim and directed by Liliadana HeSant, will be performed Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Nina Shestakova Theater of the Arts. Admission costs 80 pesos for the general public and 50 pesos for students.
On Sunday, the Sonidero del Parque will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Los Paseos linear park, with free entry.
Chapa Cortés invited residents to consult the full Olimpo Season 2026 program on the city’s website and on social media under “Mérida es Cultura,” as well as in printed brochures for August and September.
“The Olimpo Season shows us and gives us the opportunity to access what is happening in the artistic community of our city, and these expressions also reveal the concerns and motivations of our city’s creators today,” Berrón Cámara said.
