Andrés Dupont Wins Gold for Mexico at Santo Domingo 2026

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Swimmer Andrés Dupont Cabrera, a native of Cancún, won a gold medal for Mexico in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, helping the national team set a new games record.

Dupont teamed with Jorge Iga, Daniel Saborío and David Medina to post a time of 7:15.60, breaking the previous games record. Colombia took silver, while Venezuela earned bronze.

Dupont’s gold was the second for Quintana Roo at the regional games, after taekwondo athlete Carlos Sansores won the over-87-kilogram division earlier in the day.

Table tennis players from Quintana Roo are also expected to contend for medals. Several have performed well in international competitions and are considered favorites to add another gold to Mexico’s tally.

Mexico’s swimming team had a strong start to the games, collecting nine medals on day one — four gold, four silver and one bronze — along with two new games records.

For Dupont, the victory continues an impressive season. In April, he secured his place at Santo Domingo 2026 by winning two gold medals at the national trials in Veracruz. That performance also earned him a spot at the World Aquatics Championships and strengthened his bid for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Dupont received the 2025 State Sports Award from Governor Mara Lezama. His parents are Walter Dupont and Ivette Cabrera Jaimes, better known as Ivette, a singer who was part of the children’s duo Ivonne e Ivette and appeared on the television program “Chiquilladas.”

Dupont is still competing at the Central American and Caribbean Games and will aim to add more medals in other relay events.
