Cancún, Mexico — Cancún transformed into a sanctuary of light and hope on February 2 as residents celebrated Candlemas, a religious tradition that brought families together for candle blessings and the presentation of Baby Jesus figures.
At the historic Cristo Rey parish, incense and hymns marked the rhythm from 7 a.m., with the highlight occurring at noon when the candle blessing ritual lit a symbolic flame at the altar. Each blessed candle now represents divine guidance that believers take home to illuminate the rest of the year.
The emotional peak came with the presentation of the Baby Jesus. Parishioners showed off meticulously crafted outfits for their figures, from white silk robes to specific devotional garments, demonstrating that care in dressing the image reflects each family’s love and gratitude for blessings received.
Outside, religious mysticism blended with popular warmth as the aroma of corn and banana leaves announced the start of the traditional “tamaliza,” closing the cycle that began with Three Kings’ Day bread.
Between prayers and fellowship, Cancún reaffirmed that its community identity remains as strong as the faith that filled its temples.
