Tulum, Mexico — A man’s body was discovered late Tuesday night on the Playa del Carmen–Tulum highway near the roundabout leading to the archaeological zone, prompting initial reports of a possible hit-and-run. Authorities have since ruled out any traffic-related incident.
According to sources within the Public Security Department, the deceased was a homeless man who died from cirrhosis. Officials confirmed no vehicle was involved in his death.
Witnesses called emergency services just before midnight after spotting a person lying on the roadway. Civil protection personnel and private paramedics responded to the scene and confirmed the man had no vital signs.
Authorities cordoned off the area to preserve the scene in accordance with established protocols. The State Prosecutor’s Office later conducted an investigation and removed the body. The man remains unidentified.
Officials reiterated that the death was not related to a traffic accident and did not involve a hit-and-run, contrary to earlier preliminary reports.
