Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Music, culture and community came together at the Teatro de la Ciudad as the St. Florian Boys’ Choir of Austria performed in a benefit concert alongside young local musicians from Playa del Carmen.

The event brought together the internationally recognized St. Florianer Sängerknaben, known in Spanish as Los Niños Cantores de San Florian, with the Orquesta Sinfónica Infantil y Juvenil de Playa del Carmen and the choir of Instituto Tepeyac / Colegio Xcaret Tepeyac. The concert was organized as a cultural and charitable event in support of the facial prosthetics program led by the Club Rotario Playa del Carmen Internacional.

The Austrian choir’s visit to Playa del Carmen was part of its 2026 Mexico concert tour, which included performances in Chimalhuacán, Mexico City, Zamora, Morelia, Zapopan, Guadalajara and the Riviera Maya. The Austrian Cultural Forum in Mexico listed the Playa del Carmen concert for July 6 at the Teatro de la Ciudad, following a July 5 performance at Río Secreto.

Founded in 1071, the St. Florian Boys’ Choir is one of Austria’s historic choral institutions. The choir has long been connected to sacred music in St. Florian and has also performed internationally as a cultural ambassador of Upper Austria. Its members have appeared at major festivals and collaborated with prominent orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic and The Cleveland Orchestra.

In Playa del Carmen, the performance carried an additional purpose. Local reports ahead of the concert said proceeds would help strengthen a program that provides free facial prostheses for people living with congenital malformations, illness-related facial loss or injuries caused by accidents.

The Rotary-led initiative has already drawn attention locally. In late June, the Club Rotario Playa del Carmen Internacional announced a facial prosthetics clinic expected to benefit nine patients with 10 prosthetic pieces, including one patient who required a double prosthesis. The program was described as a first-of-its-kind effort in Latin America and was made possible with the support of volunteer specialists from different parts of Mexico.

For organizers, the concert was more than a musical presentation. It was a way to connect international talent with local youth while raising awareness and support for a cause that can directly change lives. Primor Angulo, president-elect of Club Rotario Playa del Carmen Internacional, described the visit as a form of fellowship with Austrian Rotarians and an opportunity to bring together culture, solidarity and community service.

The evening gave audiences a rare chance to hear one of Europe’s historic youth choirs share the stage with Playa del Carmen’s own young musicians. It also underscored a simple message: music can do more than entertain. In the right hands, it can help build bridges, support local families and bring dignity to people facing life-changing medical challenges.
