Attempted Extortion at Cancun Bank Triggers Major Police Response

Police vehicles and officers deployed near a Santander bank branch on Jose Lopez Portillo avenue in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A heavy police deployment unfolded Tuesday afternoon near a Santander bank branch on Jose Lopez Portillo Avenue after reports of an attempted extortion.

According to preliminary information, a man allegedly tried to force another person to make a cash deposit at the bank. Witnesses called 911, prompting a rapid response from municipal police officers.

When officers arrived, they set up an operation to locate the suspect. However, the man fled upon seeing the patrols and took refuge in a nearby house to avoid arrest.

Using information gathered at the scene, police identified the home where the suspect was believed to have entered and deployed a search operation in the area to prevent his escape.

While conducting patrols and inspections in the vicinity, officers stopped several individuals considered suspicious. During one search, they found a man in possession of substances resembling drugs. He was detained and handed over to the appropriate authorities for investigation.

The operation lasted several minutes around the bank and nearby streets, as municipal officers continued checking people and gathering information to establish the suspect’s escape route.

As of now, authorities have not officially confirmed whether the main suspect has been located or arrested. Investigations are ongoing to clarify the events and determine if others were involved in the attempted extortion.
