Cancun, Quintana Roo — The Civil Registry of Cancun is preparing a dedicated death registration room to provide families with a more private, comfortable, and orderly setting when they handle paperwork after losing a loved one. The new space could begin operating between August and September at the offices of Prosecutor’s Offices 01 and 02, near Las Palapas Park.
Eduardo Kuyoc, director of the Civil Registry, explained that the measure also responds to the volume of procedures carried out in the city, with the agency registering between 300 and 350 deaths each month. The goal is to give relatives an appropriate place to wait and receive service instead of completing these formalities in spaces that are ill-suited for such a sensitive moment.
The project includes setting fixed hours and an appointment schedule to organize the flow of people and reduce wait times, currently around 15 to 20 minutes. Kuyoc said that beyond speeding up the process, the aim is to offer more compassionate treatment to those grieving a family member.
He reminded residents that after a death, the death certificate must first be obtained, and then the family can choose a funeral home for the corresponding services. He also recommended processing the death certificate within the first six days after the death, as later registration may be considered late and require additional documentation.
