Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún will join a global day of remembrance for missing people and their families on Aug. 30 with an event at Parque de Las Palapas, organizers announced.
The gathering, called the Meeting for Disappeared Persons, is scheduled for 5 p.m. and coincides with the International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances.
The event will bring together searching families, activist collectives, artists, journalists, volunteers, and members of civil society to share stories, memories, and the names of those who have not returned home. Organizers are asking families to bring photographs, videos, songs, or official search notices of their loved ones to display in the public space.
The program will also include artistic performances, with musicians, photographers, videographers, and other artists invited to take part. Volunteers will also be helping at the event.
The initiative is promoted by the groups Madres Buscadoras en Isla Mujeres and Buscando por Amor, along with relatives of missing people from Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Kantunilkín, Chiquilá, and Bacalar, who consider community support a key part of the search process.
