Cancún, Quintana Roo — The modernization of the Cancún-Isla Blanca highway is 30 percent complete in its first phase, a project backed by a 380.9 million peso investment that will widen a 4.2-kilometer stretch from two to four lanes, Governor Mara Lezama said during a site inspection.
The project includes a central median, a bike lane, sidewalks, street lighting, signage and a new 20-centimeter asphalt layer. It also involves underground work such as storm drainage, adjustments to Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) power lines and ducts for connectivity services.
For hydraulic infrastructure, crews will install 25 drainage structures using high-density polyethylene pipe, designed to preserve the natural water flow in the area. High- and medium-voltage CFE utility boxes will also be re-leveled to prevent future pavement cuts, according to the state government.
Lezama said the road is strategically important for workers commuting between Cancún, Costa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres, and serves as a key route for tourism. She stressed that the project was designed to offer greater safety, durability and functionality in the coming years.
Once the first phase is completed, plans call for a second, seven-kilometer segment to José López Portillo Avenue, then an extension toward Costa Mujeres. Representatives from the federal Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) and state agencies SEOP and SEDETUS took part in the inspection to review technical aspects and progress.
