Abril Es Danza Festival Brings Lourdes Luna’s ‘B612’ to Playa del Carmen

Dancers perform on stage during the B612 show at Teatro de la Ciudad in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The first of two performances by acclaimed choreographer Lourdes Luna, a two-time National Dance Prize winner, drew a full house at the Teatro de la Ciudad as part of the Abril es Danza festival.

The production “B612,” inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince, captivated children and families with a sensitive, interactive stage experience. Six explorers guided the audience through an imaginative journey, creating a direct connection with viewers.

Ernesto Santiago Martínez Cuéllar, director of the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts of Playa del Carmen (IMCAP), said the presentations are part of the cultural agenda promoted by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, positioning the city as a hub for high-level artistic offerings.

Following the successful opening, the second and final performance will take place on April 24 at 7:00 p.m. with free admission, featuring “Sinónimos de percepción” (Synonyms of Perception). Choreographed by Marion Sparber and Alan Fuentes, the work explores the human condition through body language, addressing themes of freedom, inner struggle, and the search for meaning.

Originally from Monterrey, Nuevo León, Lourdes Luna won the National Dance Prize in 1993 and 1999. She directs the Créssida Danza Contemporánea company and founded the Conservatory of Dance of Yucatán, establishing herself as a leading figure in contemporary dance in Mexico.

The Abril es Danza program continues on April 28 with the pedagogical collection “Ballet con técnica” by teacher Angélica Kleen, and on April 29 with the performance “Entretejiendo arrullos” by Liz Mercado and the collective Hilos. Both events will be held at the Teatro de la Ciudad with free admission.
