Yucatan Peninsula to See Intense Heat and Clear Skies Friday

Mérida, Yucatan — The Yucatan Peninsula will see intense heat and mostly clear skies on Friday, April 17, according to Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN).

Elevated temperatures will affect cities across the region from Mérida to Chetumal, with little chance of rain.

Mérida will experience a sunny day with a low of 17°C and a high of 38°C. The city currently reports 27.1°C with clear skies and 0% humidity.

Cancún and Chetumal will have milder conditions, with lows of 22°C and highs of 29°C under partly cloudy skies.

Tulum expects temperatures from 20.3°C to 30.7°C, with central areas around 25.1°C. Playa del Carmen will see similar readings from 20°C to 30.7°C, with main areas near 25.9°C.

Rain and Wind Outlook

Rain probability is virtually zero across the peninsula on Friday. Conditions will remain dry with 0% humidity in major cities, contributing to the heat and lack of precipitation.

Winds in Mérida will blow at 13 km/h, while Cancún and Chetumal will see 15 km/h winds. Tulum and Playa del Carmen will experience gentler winds of 11 km/h.

Skies will be clear in Mérida and partly cloudy in Quintana Roo’s coastal cities, favoring sunny conditions throughout the day.

Weekend Forecast

The forecast for the next three days in the Yucatan Peninsula is as follows:

  • Friday, April 17: High of 38°C, low of 17°C, clear, wind 14 km/h
  • Saturday, April 18: High of 37°C, low of 17°C, partly cloudy, wind 13 km/h
  • Sunday, April 19: High of 39°C, low of 17°C, cloudy, wind 13 km/h

The weekend trend shows a gradual increase in maximum temperatures, especially on Sunday when they could reach 39°C. Lows will remain stable at 17°C. Skies will transition from clear to cloudy by the end of the period, but no significant rain is expected.

Heat Safety Recommendations

Given the intense heat dominating the region, officials recommend taking precautions to protect health. Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if not thirsty.

Avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak radiation hours between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Wear light-colored, lightweight clothing and a hat or cap to mitigate sun effects. Apply high-factor sunscreen. For outdoor activities, plan them for early morning or evening when temperatures are lower to prevent heatstroke.
