Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen activated a digital registration platform on Sept. 1 for the estimated 16,000 vacation rental properties operating in the destination, part of a municipal push to bring the short-term lodging market under clearer oversight.
Guillermo Brahms González, the municipal treasurer, said the new system is designed to centralize property registrations regardless of which booking website hosts each listing. He said Playa del Carmen is one of Mexico’s leading destinations for vacation rentals.
Fully Digital Process
Registration can be completed entirely online, and vacation rental platforms will be able to take part in registering the properties they list, Brahms González said.
Municipal officials plan an outreach campaign to explain the system to owners, managers and operators and outline the steps required to comply with registration.
Brahms González said the municipality will use the general category of vacation rental for all properties, independent of the commercial platform where they are advertised, with the goal of creating a clearer inventory of this lodging segment and bringing more order to how it operates in Playa del Carmen.
