Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Grupo Xcaret has confirmed it revoked the invitation previously extended to the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, to attend the Platino Awards this weekend in Riviera Maya.

The company denied receiving any pressure from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum or the federal government to make the decision, contradicting insinuations made by Díaz Ayuso. Xcaret said it did not want the awards ceremony to be used for political purposes.

“Regarding the statement issued this morning by the Community of Madrid, we categorically deny having received threats or any instruction from the president of our country, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, or any official of the Government of Mexico concerning the holding of the Platino Xcaret Awards,” the company said in a statement.

The statement went on to clarify the company’s position and explain why it withdrew the invitation from the controversial Spanish politician, who has faced criticism for remarks described as racist and classist toward Mexico.

“The Platino Xcaret Awards event represents a celebration that recognizes and honors the best of the arts, creativity, and multicultural richness of our Ibero-American community. It is also a space that promotes respect, coexistence, and brotherhood among the 23 countries that make up this great region,” the statement added.

“Throughout its 13-year history, the Platino Awards have consolidated as one of the most important platforms for the Ibero-American audiovisual industry. This week we proudly celebrate the fourth edition at Xcaret in Riviera Maya, reaffirming our commitment to culture, talent, and unity among our peoples.”

Grupo Xcaret made clear it would not allow the Platino Awards to be used as a political platform, in this case by Díaz Ayuso.

“Due to the unfortunate statements made by the representative of the Community of Madrid in recent months, culminating in a political tour in Mexico in the days prior to the celebration of the Platino Xcaret Awards, we have asked the organizers to revoke her invitation to prevent the event from being used as a political platform instead of the celebration that seeks to honor the Ibero-American film industry,” the document concluded.

The Mexican consortium’s statement came in response to one from the Community of Madrid, which alleged that President Sheinbaum had intervened by threatening to shut down the venue if Díaz Ayuso attended.

Despite claims by Spanish and Mexican right-wing figures, Grupo Xcaret’s statement denied that it was pressured by the president and explained that the decision was made to prevent the awards from becoming a political event.
