Quintana Roo Waste Management Upgrade Funded by Environmental Sanitation Fee

The municipal authority of Solidaridad, Quintana Roo, has announced plans to improve trash collection and solid waste management systems. This will be funded by the revenue generated from the Environmental Sanitation Fee (DSA). The treasurer of the municipality, Javier Regalado Ramírez, made this announcement recently.

Ramírez noted that since the beginning of the administration of municipal president, Estefanía Mercado Asencio, 25 garbage collection trucks have been deployed. This is part of a larger plan to put a total of 50 trucks into operation. The collection scheme is unique in that it is not charged by the rental of the vehicles, but by the tonnage of garbage collected, which is priced at 1,400 pesos.

In relation to parking meters in Playa del Carmen, Ramírez confirmed that they will continue to operate. This is because the concession for their operation cannot be revoked until the agreed term has expired. He commented, “All administrations have wanted to cancel the concession because the contracts made by each administration affect municipal finances, but we must wait for the time established in the agreement to end.”

Ramírez also confirmed that the current administration inherited liabilities to debtors from previous municipal administrations, excluding that of Lili Campos, who he stated had fulfilled all her payments. He further added that the refinancing of the municipal debt carried out in the previous administration will free up approximately 20 million pesos due to improved interest rates.
