Tulum Authorities Rescue Nine Horses From Neglect

Nine horses rescued by Tulum authorities showing signs of malnutrition and dehydration

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities in Tulum have rescued nine horses showing signs of malnutrition, dehydration, and untreated injuries after responding to a citizen complaint about animal abuse and abandonment.

Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo personally supervised the health inspection of the horses, which were removed from a tourist service establishment on June 2. The operation involved personnel from the Environmental Sustainability Department, Administrative Inspection, Animal Welfare, Public Security, and Civil Protection.

“I gave instructions to the Ecology Department to address this citizen complaint together with all necessary agencies. This government will not allow any private individuals to fail to provide dignified conditions that an animal should have,” Castañón said.

Inspectors found seven female and two male horses, aged between 6 and 15 years, with clear signs of malnutrition, dehydration, superficial wounds lacking veterinary attention, and no horseshoes. The site had no available food or water, adequate corrals, or sufficient shelter from weather conditions.

Armando Angulo, director of Environmental Sustainability, said the decision to seize the animals was made to prioritize their welfare. “Based on the evidence and prioritizing the well-being of the animals, we proceeded with the precautionary seizure of the nine horses to provide veterinary medical care, food, hydration, and the necessary care for their recovery,” he stated.

The municipality is coordinating with the Quintana Roo State Environmental Protection Prosecutor’s Office (PPA) for comprehensive case management and legal proceedings.
