Cobá, Tulum, Quintana Roo — A girl was killed and two women were injured Saturday night in a motorcycle crash on a road that runs along the Cobá lagoon.
According to initial reports, the three were riding a semi-automatic motorcycle toward San Juan when the driver lost control at a curve and crashed.
The crash was reported around 9:08 p.m., and an ambulance was sent from the hospital in Tulum. However, the vehicle suffered a mechanical breakdown en route and never reached the scene, according to preliminary reports.
Residents and passersby stepped in to help, using their own vehicles to take the two injured women to Valladolid, Yucatán, for medical care.
Municipal police reached the site and kept the area cordoned off until investigators arrived to process the scene and carry out procedures related to the girl’s death.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The incident has again raised questions about the capacity of emergency services to reach communities far from Tulum, the municipal seat, and about the mechanical condition of the ambulances that respond to rural emergencies.
