Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A firefighter captured one of two men suspected of assaulting and robbing an elderly man during an early Sunday morning attack in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood.
Witnesses told authorities the two suspects approached the victim while riding a motorcycle near 90th Avenue North and 2nd Street North at Benito Juárez Avenue, then struck him and attempted to take his belongings.
The firefighter, who was heading to work, saw the attack and intervened. The suspects tried to escape — one managing to flee on the motorcycle, while the second ran off on foot. The firefighter chased the man and detained him a few blocks away, holding him until bystanders called 911.
Municipal police officers arrived moments later, took the suspect into custody and turned him over to authorities.
The elderly man received medical attention for injuries sustained during the assault. Officials have not released his identity or detailed what property was taken.
Authorities are investigating whether the detained suspect has ties to the second man, who remains at large. The case also highlights the firefighter’s quick action outside his usual emergency response duties.
