Tulum, Quintana Roo — A 19-year-old motorcyclist was injured in a crash on Federal Highway 307 near the southern exit of Tulum toward Aldea Tulum, after a U.S. tourist made an abrupt turn in a rented car, according to authorities.

The woman was driving a white Chevrolet Aveo with Quintana Roo plates south to north when she made a sudden turn without proper caution, causing the rider of an Italika 125 motorcycle traveling behind to crash into the left rear of the vehicle.

The impact threw the young motorcyclist onto the road. Private ambulance paramedics provided on-site care and then transported him to the IMSS-Bienestar hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Witnesses said the tourist, assisted by a man acting as translator, stated she would cover the accident costs and contacted the rental car’s insurance company.

Municipal Public Security officers arrived to secure the area and prevent further incidents, as the crash occurred on one of the busiest stretches of the federal highway. Although the road falls under the jurisdiction of the National Guard’s Highway Division, witnesses reported that federal officers took several minutes to arrive and begin determining fault.
