Sheinbaum Contrasts Past and Present at Inauguration of Cancun’s Nichupté Bridge

Cancún, Quintana Roo — President Claudia Sheinbaum delivered an unusually brief speech Saturday at the inauguration of the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge, one of the most anticipated infrastructure projects in Cancún, using the occasion to draw a sharp contrast between her administration and previous governments.

“Where there was once corruption, today there is honesty. Where there was once inequality, today there is equality. Where barriers were once built, today bridges are built,” Sheinbaum said.

The message, one of the shortest of her public career, directly targeted a political narrative: distinguishing previous administrations — which she accused of corruption, inequality and division — from the so-called Fourth Transformation, which she defined as a project based on honesty and love for the country.

Sheinbaum led the crowd in chants about honesty and closed with a “¡Que viva México!” in a highly symbolic atmosphere.

Beyond the formal ceremony, the bridge opening turned into a massive celebration. Thousands of Cancún residents took to the roadway before its official opening to vehicular traffic. The scene resembled a street fair more than an official event: cyclists, runners and families crossed the bridge as the sun set over the lagoon.

Commemorative T-shirts, drones flying overhead and boats accompanying from the water added to the festive atmosphere. On land, the president was accessible, greeting attendees and posing for photographs.
