Reports of Attack on Navy Personnel in Holbox Remain Unconfirmed After Shooting Near Garrison Area

confusing reports after shooting on Holbox

Holbox, Quintana Roo — Conflicting reports circulated Sunday after a shooting late Saturday night in Holbox, with some local outlets claiming an armed group attacked a security base used by the Secretaría de Marina and Grupo Centurión. However, other reporting citing the National Guard says authorities have no record confirming the events occurred in the way described by those posts.

What is more clearly reported is that a man was shot Saturday night while traveling on Palominos Street, near the Navy garrison area and in front of a business identified locally as Platanito Fishing.

Security personnel and private paramedics reportedly responded to the injured man, and the case was referred to the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office because a firearm was involved.

As of the latest reports reviewed, the Fiscalía General del Estado had not issued an official statement confirming the identity of the victim, the motive, possible arrests, or whether the incident was connected to an attack on federal security personnel.

Several social media posts and some local news outlets described a much larger incident, alleging that armed men arrived by boat, opened fire on a base shared by Grupo Centurión and SEMAR, injured one or two security officers, and prompted a nighttime restriction on maritime navigation. Those reports also suggested the attack could have been retaliation for recent operations against drug dealing or extortion on the island. At this stage, those claims should be treated as preliminary and unconfirmed.

The National Guard, according to local reporting, said it had no report supporting the version that Navy personnel were attacked as described. Local authorities also asked the public not to spread publications that could damage the destination ahead of the upcoming summer vacation season, while saying visitor safety remains guaranteed. That does not mean nothing happened. It means the most serious claims have not been officially verified.

Holbox has faced growing concern in recent years over public safety, especially as the island’s popularity has increased and tourism activity has expanded. Like other destinations in Quintana Roo, Holbox depends heavily on visitor confidence, and reports of violence can spread quickly, especially when they involve claims of organized crime, armed groups, or attacks on security forces.

For residents, business owners, and travelers, the distinction matters. A shooting near a Navy garrison is serious. An organized attack on a Navy and Grupo Centurión base would be a much larger security event. As of now, public reporting supports the first point more clearly than the second.

Until the Fiscalía or federal security authorities release an official statement, the most responsible conclusion is this: a shooting did occur in Holbox late Saturday night, one man was reportedly injured, and authorities opened an investigation. Claims of a direct attack on Navy personnel, multiple injured officers, armed attackers arriving by boat, and a confirmed retaliation motive remain unverified.
