Cancun, Quintana Roo — A woman was killed and at least three people were injured Thursday in a crash on Bonampak Avenue outside Plaza Peninsula, emergency officials said.
The driver of a Honda vehicle was speeding and lost control for reasons still under investigation, according to officials at the scene. The vehicle jumped the median, struck a streetlight pole and rolled over for several meters.
During the rollover, the vehicle struck a woman who was apparently getting out of a Kia car. She was thrown from the impact and died at the scene despite the arrival of paramedics.
The Honda driver was injured and taken to a hospital operated by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). The Kia driver also sustained injuries and received medical attention.
Traffic officers and emergency crews remained at the scene awaiting the State Prosecutor’s Office to carry out the investigation. The woman’s body was taken to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo), where an autopsy will be performed and where it will remain until she is identified and claimed by relatives.
Authorities will determine responsibility for the fatal crash.
