Tulum Fisherman Loses Pulse in Diving Accident; Crew Tried to Resubmerge Him

Paramedics attend to a fisherman who suffered decompression sickness at a beach in Tulum.

Tulum, Quintana Roo — A spearfisherman was taken to a private clinic Thursday morning after briefly losing his pulse in a decompression accident off a beach near Punta Piedra.

The man surfaced unconscious and his skin quickly turned blue, which his fellow fishermen recognized as decompression sickness. When Red Cross paramedics, civil protection personnel, officers from the Mexican Navy and municipal police arrived, the crew initially tried to handle the situation themselves, loading the man back onto their boat to submerge him in the sea and “recompress” him.

Before they could put the unconscious man back into the water, relatives arrived at the beach and called the fishermen, asking them to return to shore. The crew complied, but by then the man was showing no vital signs. Paramedics performed CPR until his pulse and breathing returned, and he was rushed by ambulance to a private clinic.
