Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Mexican state of Quintana Roo received a major international honor at the Responsible Tourism Awards during WTM Latin America, where the Kíichpam K’áax – Selva Bonita ecotourism center won the gold prize in the indigenous and traditional communities tourism category.
Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa said the achievement places the state on the global stage and recognizes work on tourism projects focused on sustainability, cultural identity, and social development. She noted that the award confirms the quality of experiences offered in the Mexican Caribbean.
Lezama explained that Quintana Roo continues to position itself as a leader in responsible tourism through initiatives led by Maya families, which promote conservation of the natural environment and respect for local traditions.
The recognition for Kíichpam K’áax highlighted its model based on community well-being, environmental protection, and social participation. It also solidified Maya Ka’an as a strategic zone for those seeking authentic experiences connected to nature and the state’s living culture.
The governor emphasized that these results reflect a vision of tourism with shared prosperity, where communities participate directly in the economic benefits generated by tourism activity.
