Cancún Municipality Escalates Dispute Over Former Fairgrounds

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Benito Juárez municipal government has escalated its dispute with a private landowner over a former fairgrounds site on Avenida Nichupté, where it is seeking to recover the property over unpaid property taxes.

Officials placed a banner at the front of the lot warning that the land “is subject to legal proceedings for property tax arrears,” a notice backed by the municipality’s Coordinated Revenue and Collection Department.

Over the weekend, the municipal Ecology Department added a new closure seal, apparently in response to land clearing that had been carried out inside the property.

Security personnel are now stationed at both the front and rear of the lot to prevent anyone from entering or attempting to take possession of it. A small shelter made of cardboard sheets has been set up in front, where a motorcycle is also parked. At the rear, backpacks and bottles of soft drinks and water can be seen under a tree.

On Avenida Politécnico, the wooden structures that mark the property’s boundary have been reinforced. Utility poles installed to provide service to nearby settlements remain on the site, reflecting an earlier proposal to build a street connecting Avenida Nichupté and Avenida Politécnico.
