Cancún Mayor Leads Tribute to City Pioneers on 56th Anniversary

Cancún Mayor Ana Paty Peralta places a floral tribute at the Pioneer Monument during the city's 56th anniversary ceremony.

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mayor Ana Paty Peralta led a tribute to Cancún’s first settlers on Friday, placing a floral offering at the Pioneer Monument to mark the city’s 56th anniversary. The ceremony, accompanied by the song “Me está llamando Cancún,” drew dozens of residents and representatives from civic associations including Pioneros de Cancún, Fundadores de Cancún, Historiadores de Cancún, and Me está llamando Cancún.

Peralta emphasized that the tribute serves as a call for unity, urging the community to continue building a peaceful Cancún proud of its roots. “Speaking of Cancún is speaking of our roots, our first families, a community that grew united, resilient, and has always known how to move forward,” she said. “I am a third-generation Cancún resident. I have built my dreams here, and I say this with immense pride but also immense responsibility because, like you, I love Cancún deeply.”

She added that serving her hometown is an honor and a privilege, but also her greatest responsibility, stating that transforming the city means not forgetting where it came from, putting people first, strengthening the community, and building a Cancún where well-being reaches every corner.

Guadalupe del Rosario González Gómez, president of the Pioneros de Cancún association, noted that the homage honors those who have left a legacy of work and pride. “This is a tribute to the men and women with adventurous and steadfast hearts who 56 years ago began a new life in a place where there was nothing, forming united families that built community, solidarity, and a great Cancún family,” she said.

Attendees held a guard of honor and placed the floral offering at the monument’s base while the quartet Los Príncipes performed. The event also featured a traditional cake-cutting ceremony with “Las Mañanitas” and concluded with Peralta planting a native pink Maculís tree, a tropical ornamental species that can grow 25-30 meters tall.
