Quintana Roo has second-most influenza cases in Mexico

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Influenza is circulating more widely than COVID-19 in Quintana Roo in 2026, according to the latest report from the Respiratory Viral Disease Epidemiological Surveillance System. The state ranks second nationally in confirmed cases during the inter-seasonal period, which runs from epidemiological week 21 to week 39.

As of epidemiological week 29, covering July 19–25, Quintana Roo had recorded 44 confirmed influenza cases. Only Yucatán reported more, with 87. Together, the two states account for more than 40% of all cases detected nationwide.

Health officials said 362 people with respiratory symptoms were tested in Quintana Roo, and 12.2% tested positive for influenza — well above the national positivity rate of 1.9%. No deaths from influenza have been reported in the state.

At the national level, Mexico has confirmed 317 inter-seasonal influenza cases and four deaths in 2026. The predominant strain is influenza A(H3N2), followed by influenza type B.

By contrast, COVID-19 activity remains low in Quintana Roo, with 10 confirmed cases this year and no officially reported deaths.

Health authorities are urging preventive measures, particularly for vulnerable groups such as older adults, children, and people with chronic conditions.
