Facebook Groups Flagged for Child Sexual Abuse in Quintana Roo

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Public Security Secretariat and the cyber police unit in Quintana Roo have detected two Facebook groups containing content suspected to depict child sexual abuse, officials said.

The cases were referred to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Trafficking and Exploitation of Children and Adolescents, an office within the State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE), to begin the corresponding investigations.

The alert gained urgency after the arrest of Marco Antonio “N,” 31, who is accused of storing and distributing intimate photos and videos of children in Cancún. He was taken into custody by the FGE during a search of a home in the Privadas del Sol subdivision, in Supermanzana 61, over the weekend.

Investigators identified the man using information provided by the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which flagged an email account and telephone number allegedly linked to a platform used to store and distribute such material.

The Public Security Secretariat said that in 2025, only one case involving suspected exchange of child sexual abuse material was referred to prosecutors. That case involved a group on digital platforms called “La Princesa de Papá,” where such content was allegedly shared. The agency provided guidance to the complainant on filing a formal complaint with the FGE and notified the specialized prosecutor’s office for legal follow-up.

So far in 2026, a second case has been referred, and the cyber police unit said it remains in coordination with ministerial authorities to build the investigations. The agency said its function is to receive reports, provide technical guidance, and forward information to competent authorities, as criminal investigations can only begin with a formal complaint.

In a separate matter, the cyber police unit said it recently secured the removal of 493 profiles and pages linked to cyberbullying. Those actions resulted from reports made by telephone, WhatsApp, and complaints filed by students during prevention talks at public and private schools.
