Puerto Morelos Seals Time Capsule To Be Opened In 2050

Officials sealing a stainless steel time capsule during a ceremony in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — As part of its 10th anniversary as a municipality, Puerto Morelos sealed a time capsule on Saturday containing letters, documents, and artifacts that will be opened in 2050.

Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz led the ceremony, which included letters written by local children, a letter from Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, a message from the mayor, historical documents, statistics, a map of the territory, representative photographs, handicrafts by artisan Ermilio Noh Dzib, and various testimonials depicting life in Puerto Morelos in 2026.

The stainless steel capsule features a hermetic and anticorrosive system to preserve its contents. Each document was placed in special conservation envelopes and archival boxes designed to keep them in optimal condition for more than two decades.

“We have to always work with a clear plan and a vision for the future. Our work is not only for those of us who live here today, but for future generations, to whom we must guarantee a place with opportunities for everyone, a clean, sustainable municipality with an environment of peace,” Mayor Tziu said.

Romina Solorio Espinoza, president of the 2026 Children’s Council, highlighted the project’s value. “Today we store more than papers and objects; we store a piece of the present so that the future can discover it. We want the children who live here in 24 years to know what Puerto Morelos was like and to learn about our dreams,” she said.

The director of the Office for Attention to Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples, who gave a welcome in the Maya language, explained that the capsule “reminds us that history is not only preserved in books or photographs, but also in the dreams, words, and hopes of those who build this community every day.”

Mayor Tziu deposited her letter and the governor’s letter into the capsule, then along with members of the 10th Anniversary Organizing Committee and artisan Ermilo Noh, sealed the container.

The mayor also presented recognition certificates to children from various schools whose letters were selected for the capsule, including Romina Solorio Espinoza, Liesel González Morales, Tadeo Emilio Martínez Cid del Prado, Eymii Arlet Gutiérrez Martínez, Keitany Itzayana Franco Rodríguez, Sofía Belem González Morales, Valentina Pech López, Natalia Michelle Ríos Antonio, Frida Abigail Trejo Azcorra, Indra Ariel Lozano Moysén, and Hermann Schuster Mercado.

The writings and drawings will remain sealed for 24 years and will be read when the container is opened, serving as a valuable testimony of the dreams and vision of Puerto Morelos’s youth for the future of their municipality.
