Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — In an effort to modernize and enhance accessibility, the installation of a public WiFi network has begun in the tourist zone of Puerto Morelos. The initiative aims to provide connectivity for residents and visitors alike, announced Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz.
Expanding Connectivity for Tourism and Commerce
The project involves the placement of two WiFi modules, each offering coverage spanning over 50 linear meters, located at Parque Fundadores and the Fishermen’s Pier. Each module will support simultaneous connections for up to 200 devices.
Mayor Tziu Muñoz expressed gratitude to Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama for facilitating the agreement with telecommunications company GigNet, as well as to the state’s Tourism Secretariat for supporting the destination’s growth. She emphasized that the service will create new opportunities for local vendors, including artisans and food sellers, by improving digital access for commerce.
Infrastructure and Implementation
Luis de Potestad Clemens, Vice President of Institutional Relations and Special Projects at GigNet, detailed the technical aspects of the installation. The project includes a dedicated 1-gigabit fiber-optic link, requiring underground conduit work, interconnection access points, stamped concrete flooring, asphalt restoration, and verification of hydraulic, sanitary, and electrical systems.
De Potestad highlighted the broader significance of the initiative, stating, “We are investing in the future, exploring opportunities that will shape tomorrow’s landscape.” He emphasized that the effort goes beyond connectivity, contributing to Puerto Morelos’ development as a growing tourist destination.
