The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has halted an unauthorized geotubes operation on the coast of Playa del Carmen. The geotubes were being used for the Beach Volleyball World Tour, an event endorsed by the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (Conade) and promoted by former NBA player Eduardo Nájera.
Nájera, who is romantically involved with Estefanía Mercado, the president of Solidaridad county, was recently designated as the "Sports Ambassador" for Playa del Carmen. His first appearance in this role was in early March, when he announced the Beach Volleyball World Tour event in the city.
Mercado often highlights her relationship with Nájera on her official social media accounts. The illegal geotubes operation was stopped by Profepa, reinforcing the importance of environmental protection in the region.
