Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Residents turned over more than 3,000 cartridges and several firearms during the first two installments of the state’s Peace and Voluntary Disarmament Fairs, authorities announced.
The initiative aims to remove weapons and ammunition from homes and promote a culture of prevention and peace. Participation is voluntary, and officials said no questions are asked about where the items came from.
Playa del Carmen participation
During the four-day event in Playa del Carmen, 87 people took part and exchanged 51 toy weapons for educational or sporting items. Authorities reported no firearms turned in there, but collected 546 cartridges in calibers including 9mm, .38, .38 Special, .44 Magnum, .380, 7.62 and .223, as well as one magazine.
Othón P. Blanco reports largest haul
In Othón P. Blanco, 170 people — 82 women and 88 men — participated. Residents surrendered two pistols, a carbine, a revolver and four rifles, along with 2,471 cartridges, 26 short-arm devices, 23 long-arm devices and 146 detonating caps. They also exchanged 83 toy weapons for educational or sporting items.
Upcoming fairs
The program will continue in Benito Juárez from August 24 to 27, Felipe Carrillo Puerto from September 2 to 4, and José María Morelos on September 8 and 9.
