Playa del Carmen Mayor Leads Birth Certificate Drive in Marginalized Neighborhood

Mayor Estefanía Mercado speaking at a birth certificate distribution event in Nueva Esperanza, Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado led a new edition of the “Tu identidad sin tanto choro” (Your Identity Without the Hassle) program in the Nueva Esperanza neighborhood, delivering approximately 320 birth certificates to residents.

Accompanied by City Secretary Luis Herrera Quiam and Civil Registry Director Luz Marinelly Carrillo Reyna, the mayor reiterated her administration’s commitment to bringing government services closer to citizens and eliminating bureaucratic red tape.

The event offered Civil Registry services including birth certificate issuance, CURP corrections, birth registrations, and legal advice through mobile service modules.

“We are convinced that identity is a fundamental right. Having a birth certificate opens doors to education, health, and many other services, which is why we continue bringing these programs directly to the neighborhoods that need them most,” Mercado said.

She emphasized that the municipal government is working to ensure no citizen is excluded due to a lack of official documents. “We want families to have access to fast, simple, and free procedures. Our commitment is to be close to the people and solve real needs with concrete actions,” she stated.

Mercado noted that these drives are part of a permanent strategy to strengthen social inclusion and provide legal certainty to Playa del Carmen residents. “When we facilitate access to identity, we also strengthen equal opportunities and build a more just and supportive community,” she said.

The mayor invited residents to stay tuned for upcoming events in other neighborhoods across the municipality.
