Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government has launched a free discount card program called “Pase Playense,” aiming to register up to 100,000 residents and strengthen the local economy by encouraging spending at established businesses.
Presented at the old municipal palace’s “Javier Rojo Gómez” hall, the initiative was announced by Economic Development and Investment Attraction Secretary Estefanía Hernández, who said the program builds a partnership among citizens, private enterprise, and government to keep daily spending within the municipality and directly benefit local shops, entrepreneurs, and service providers.
Program coordinator Daniel Bellamy explained that the card will be available in both physical and digital formats, offering discounts and special promotions at participating establishments. “We want residents of Playa del Carmen to consume in local businesses and keep the local economy in Playa del Carmen,” he said.
The program aims to reach 100,000 registered users in the coming months, making it one of the municipal government’s most significant social and economic initiatives. Benefits include discounts at medical offices, clinical labs, dentists, pharmacies, barbershops, hair salons, stationery stores, daycare centers, private universities, and various health, education, and daily consumption services.
Hernández reported that more than 150 benefits and around 75 brands are already participating. The municipal government is working with business organizations such as CANACO Servytur, COPARMEX, and CANACINTRA to expand the network of affiliated businesses.
Businesses can register for free during the next 30 days, offering discounts preferably above 15% valid through September 2027. Officials expect the program to continue beyond the current administration if successful.
Municipal Women’s Institute Director Idania Gamboa Medina and Youth Director Gabriel Pérez Álvarez thanked the program for including women entrepreneurs and young people starting economic projects or needing school or business benefits, which they said will reduce needs and generate a circular economy among families.
They added that they will promote the card among women and youth, especially to facilitate access to medical, educational, and academic support services.
