Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal council of Playa del Carmen has ratified the donation of land to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) for the construction of a family medicine clinic in Puerto Aventuras and several daycares, while also removing previous time limits that required the projects to begin by a certain date.
Councilor Orlando Muñoz Gómez, who announced the decision, said the original agreements included specific deadlines for IMSS to start construction. Since those deadlines were not met, the council voted to ratify the donations without any time clauses, leaving it up to IMSS to decide when to begin work.
Muñoz expressed concern that without institutional pressure, the projects could face further delays. He noted that IMSS had previously cited administrative and bureaucratic procedures as reasons for not starting construction, and that no groundbreaking date has been set for the clinic.
He compared the situation to the ISSSTE medical unit in Playa del Carmen, which took over a decade to complete despite constant efforts by authorities and citizens.
The councilor emphasized that the municipal government remains willing to facilitate federal investments in health and social welfare, which is why it supported the land donation again. However, he insisted that the expectation is for the projects to materialize in the short term and not remain as cleared lots with no development.
