Tulum, Quintana Roo — The National Guard has activated its Third Airport Security Battalion at a new 21-building complex adjacent to the Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, aiming to strengthen protection at one of the main gateways to the Mexican Caribbean.
The facility can house up to 705 personnel and is under the command of Colonel Arturo Hernández Cedeño. It was inaugurated during a ceremony led by military and civilian authorities as part of the corporation’s seventh anniversary commemorations.
“These facilities were created to provide better conditions of stability, well-being, training, and capabilities for National Guard personnel, with the main objective of offering better security to society,” said Brigadier General Sergio López Acosta, the National Guard’s state coordinator in Quintana Roo.
The complex includes barracks, a dining hall, command center, training spaces, a shooting range, a swimming pool, and sports areas for physical and tactical preparation. Authorities said the infrastructure aims to boost the corporation’s operational and response capacity in the region.
Personnel assigned to the battalion will be responsible for guarding the airport facilities and contributing to public security tasks when required. They will also receive specialized training in civil aviation security as part of the strategy to protect airport infrastructure in southeastern Mexico.
Representatives from the Defense Department, the Navy, airport administration, and municipal and state authorities attended the ceremony. With this new battalion, the National Guard expands its operational presence in the Tulum airport area, considered strategic for mobility, tourism, and economic development in Quintana Roo.
