Mexico City — President Claudia Sheinbaum has appointed Luz Elena Baños as Mexico’s ambassador to Guatemala and Ana Luisa Vallejo as ambassador to Belize, in a move to bolster diplomatic relations with its Central American neighbors.
The appointments, announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), aim to enhance cooperation on border development, trade, security, and environmental initiatives. Both diplomats are career foreign service officers, and their selections underscore the increasing role of women in Mexico’s diplomatic corps.
For Belize, the agenda includes strengthening cross-border development, trade facilitation, and mobility along the Quintana Roo frontier. Coordination on security, civil protection, and cultural and educational exchanges will also be prioritized.
In Guatemala, efforts will focus on boosting bilateral trade, modernizing logistics processes, and continuing infrastructure projects along the shared border, alongside reinforcing regional security coordination mechanisms.
The appointments were approved by the Senate’s Foreign Relations and Latin America and Caribbean committees, formally accrediting the ambassadors at a pivotal moment for Mexico’s foreign policy and southern border integration.
