Mara Lezama Leads Floral Tribute to Fallen Fishermen in Cozumel

Governor Mara Lezama and Cozumel Mayor Jose Luis Chacon place a floral wreath into the sea during a tribute to fallen fishermen.

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, joined by Cozumel Mayor Jose Luis Chacon Mendez, led a floral tribute ceremony Friday to honor local fishermen and mariners who died this year.

The event, called “Hombres Caidos del Mar” (Fallen Men of the Sea), took place on the waterfront and recognized several well-known captains and seamen, including Cap. Don Payo Flores, Cap. Leo, Cap. Cocono, and Cap. Babucha. Their names are part of Cozumel’s maritime history due to their long careers and contributions to the fishing and nautical sectors.

The ceremony also honored all men of the sea who lost their lives while working in fishing, nautical tourism, and navigation — industries that have helped shape the island’s development.

Lezama and Chacon, accompanied by naval authorities, cast a floral wreath into the ocean as a symbol of respect and gratitude, in a reflective atmosphere remembering those who made the sea their way of life.

The tradition keeps alive the community’s recognition of generations of maritime workers, highlighting their courage, commitment, and contribution to the island’s identity and culture.
